This lesson was developed as part of the Louisiana Department of Education Content Standards.

The Fever 1793 webquest was developed primarily for use in the middle school social studies curriculum with integrated factors from the language arts and science curriculums. It studies in depth the free black society of post revolutionary Philadelphia and the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 in which they played a vital, life saving role.

Learners
This lesson is designed for seventh grade social studies utilizing language arts, specifically, historical fiction, to bring the past to life in an exciting and engaging fashion. The lesson would work for any study of free blacks in the United States during the eighteenth century for grades six through twelve.

Learner must be at six grade or above reading level.

Standards

Students develop a sense of historical time and historical perspective as they study the history of their community, state, nation, and world.

This learning lesson allows for cross curicular learning integrating social studies, language arts and science which allows studentst to practice utilizing expertise from one area in another and applying knowledge across several fields. Students must utilize critical thinking to discern pertinent information to be included in their newspaper and teamwork as they work toward a final creative product.
